Black snake about 1.5 feet long. Faint gray stripes. Large head, but seemed to be sick or poisoned and moved slow.

This is a mangrove salt marsh snake, Nerodia clarkii compressicauda, close to shedding. The snake was basking above the shaded mangrove shadows and somewhat oblivious to my presence -- until, of course, I I plucked the snake up for some photos. Mangrove salt marsh snakes can be highly variable in coloration.
