This looked to be a flowering vine of some sort. The plant was growing up and around other vegetative organisms. (Yet another thing to identify!)

Wisteria was in full fragrant bloom at the Virginia Tech Horticulture Gardens on April 24, 2008
Wisteria outside of the Biltmore Estate was stunning to look at, though it was not in bloom on May 26, 2007.
American Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) is a woody, deciduous, perennial climbing vine of the Fabaceae family. It is native to the wet forests and stream banks of the southeastern United States, with a range stretching from the states of Virginia to Louisiana and extending southeast through Florida.
