Nuculoida is an order of bivalves. It is the sole member of the subclass Palaeotaxodonta. They are distinguished from other bivalves by the presence of relatively primitive, "protobranchiate" gills, with a row of short teeth along the hinge of the shell. The shells are often nacreous.
