About 2-3 mm, will make one long hop (a foot or more) then hide. Found two on a dirt road through a forest.
This seems to be either pallidus or californicus but currently there is a lack of concise information. The original type description of californicus states it is (compared to pallidus) "smaller, darker, [and] distinctly spotted".
However this does not match specimen photos of the species here: http://d2vsp3qmody48p.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/08/SCOLOPS-14.gif
which are more cream than dark.
On bugguide the photos put to S. californicus it is mentioned "black stripes on head projection [were] important", but I see this in images of pallidus, californicus, and fumidus.
So...where does this guy fall?
At blacklight during the first Lake Creek Bug Night. Our thanks to Town & Country Sports for hosting this event.
