Northern Checkerspot is my best guess, but I would love confirmation / alternate suggestions. Doesn't seem black enough to be one of our local Variable Checkerspots, but then again who knows, they're called variable for a reason, I presume.
Northern Checkerspot (Chlosyne palla) is a member of the Nymphalidae family that is found in North America. They range from southern British Columbia to Alberta, south to California, Utah, and Colorado, excluding Nevada.
