Males either construct mud nests, or utilize natural puddles and call from them to attract females. Males defend their arena-like nests by engaging in fierce 'gladiatorial' contests, wrestling with each other until one frog retreats or is killed.

Hypsiboas boans is a species of frog in the Hylidae family. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, rivers, and intermittent freshwater marshes. It was previously known as Hyla boans.
