Description

early morning at the overlook. There are a few cedar waxwings that are darker than the rest with a dark grey/black vertical stripe from the neck to the belly for ~3 inches. my first thought was it is a shaded by the tree and the tree was casting a shadow.. but as I watched this small flock the dark markings on the breast remained in place on the bird no matter where they perched or how they moved.

The waxwings form the genus Bombycilla of passerine birds. According to most authorities, this is the only genus placed in the family Bombycillidae although Phainoptila is sometimes included.
