Description

These individuals were nesting nearby, nest found on Feb 18 with two eggs. A winter storm over the past week caused the nest to be abandoned, and the pair was rebuilding today.

From Birds of North America species account on subspecies:

Two subspecies recognized, differentiated by wing and tail length (Van Tyne 1925, American Ornithologists' Union 1957, Phillips 1991). Ridgway (Ridgway 1904) noted that individuals from southern portion of Mexican plateau are largest, while those from California are smallest. Mean wing and tail length approximately 7% shorter in specimens from California than San Luis Potosí, Mexico (Van Tyne 1925; see Table 3). Unknown whether variation is clinal. Degree of overlap in different seasons and intergradation poorly known. No known variation in plumage coloration. No published study available on genetic variation across range.

(1) P. nitens lepida Van Tyne, 1925. Smaller of the two subspecies: wing 86-94 mm (female), 88-96 mm (male); tail 82-95 mm (female), 86-99 mm (male) (Pyle 1997c; see also Table 3). Occupies U.S. portion of species range from California east to w. Texas (breeding records in Culberson and Jeff Davis Cos.; Oberholser 1974c) and south to s. Baja California (Cape San Lucas) and nw. Mexico (s. Sonora and Bustillos, Chihuahua; Phillips 1991). Winters south to s. Tamaulipas and central San Luis Potosí, casually to Veracruz, Guanajuato, and Aguascalientes; spreads in summer east to sw. Texas (Phillips 1991).
