Description

I am really hoping for a Salix expert to help with the arborescent willows in these canyons of the Argus and Panamint. These had long lanceolate leaves approaching 10 cm (pic with Parker pen) but also smaller and broader leaflets in between.

With Argia vivida, the two of them completing a yin yang with the twig

Nesting well within subspecies range. 4 young at least 11 days old, nearly ready to fledge.

From the Birds of North America species account:

Seven subspecies, following Phillips (1991), although the validity of two new subspecies coined by him ought to be verified by additional sampling and a comprehensive review of fresh specimens.

P. c. obscura Ridgway, 1883. Includes P. c. amoenissima Grinnell, 1926, and P. c. gracilis van Rossem, 1945. Breeds in the w. United States and nw. Mexico, including on the Baja California peninsula [type locality = San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur]; winters from s. California and nw. Mexico south to the w. and central Transvolcanic Belt (Phillips 1991). Dorsum pale bluish gray; ventrum whitish; outer rectrices extensively white distally but black basally; large (wing > 49 mm, tail > 48 mm).
