Description

Slavonian Grebe, from Cornell Birds of North America species account.

P. a. auritus (Linnaeus, 1758), the Slavonian Grebe. Includes Colymbus a. minor Pontoppidan, 1763, a nomen nudum; C. caspicus Hablizl, 1783; C. minutus Pallas, 1811; P. a. arcticus Boie, 1822; and P. a. korejevi Zarudny and Loudon, 1902. Breeds across northern Eurasia, from Scandinavia east to Kamchatka and the Sea of Okhotsk [type locality = Vaasa, Finland, per Fjeldså (27)]; overwinters coastally and disjunctly in northwestern Europe, from the Adriatic Sea east to Kazakhstan and adjacent northwestern China, and from southern Japan south to southeastern China (28). Like P. a. cornutus, but dorsum darker and blacker, with light feather edges inconspicuous or absent; in breeding plumage, plumes chestnut, and in winter, crown glossy black.

Description

Nesting birds scolding all morning.

Several subspecies have been identified. These include:

T. t. robusta - (Schiøler, 1919)[4]: found in Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
T. t. ussuriensis - Buturlin, 1934[5]: found in southern Siberia, Mongolia and east Asia
T. t. terrignotae - Meinertzhagen, R. & Meinertzhagen, A., 1926: found in southern Manchuria and eastern China
T. t. craggi - Hale, 1971: found in north west China
T. t. eurhina - (Oberholser, 1900)[6]: found in Tajikistan, north India and Tibet[7][8]
