Description

One of three territorial males on plot. From the Cornell Birds of North America species account:

I. v. auricollis (Deppe, 1830): Also known as Long-tailed Chat. Breeds western portion of range from w. Great Plains (including s. Saskatchewan) and w. Texas westward; winters from s. Baja California, s. Sinaloa, and s. Texas south to Colima, Oaxaca, and central Guatemala. Specimens of vagrants ascribed to this race have been taken as far east as Georgia and Massachusetts (Dunn and Garrett 1997). Upperparts grayer (less greenish) compared with nominate virens, especially crown, wings, and back; malar-feathers mostly white; tail longer than wing (tail averages 6 mm longer, sex for sex, than nominate virens); tendency for males to exhibit deep orange-yellow breast (more frequently yellow, lacking orange tones, in eastern males). Western birds formerly known under name I. v. longicauda . Also includes as synonym I. v. tropicalis of van Rossem for birds from Mexico (based on specimens from Tesia, Sonora).

Description

I photographed this fish because it seemed off for a pupfish, too big, wrong color, face wrong. If true this is a green sunfish someone has dumped it here.

Update - confirmed by California Department of Fish and Wildlife as Green Sunfish :(
