Description

Found some plants on the north side of the clearing near the parking lot a week ago; came back today and found a much more extensive population immediately to the east along the trail and especially on the wooded slopes near the platform south of the parking lot. Now much more confident that this is a native population.

Observer

Description

Keyed quite easily in Michigan Flora.

Leaf veins all running to ends of lobes; flowering early; leaf blades [broadly] cuneate to base; bracteoles of inflorescence numerous and obviously gladular-margined; petioles glandular; inflorescence with <8 flowers and umbelliform; leaves and inflorescence glabrous; stamens always 10 or fewer.

What

Holmes' Hawthorn Crataegus holmesiana

Observer

nathan20

Date

May 20, 2019 03:51 PM EDT

Description

Infuriating. I am pretty confident that this is either C. coccinea or C. holmesiana. Clearly not any of the non-native species. In addition to early flowering time, all species under the first lead of couplet 4 in the Michigan Flora key were eliminated by two or more characters. Took this down the first lead of couplet 9 as well and none of those options made much sense either (other than C. dodgei, but leaf lobes as well as hairy inflorescence and upper leaf surfaces do not seem to match). From there: Leaf blades broadly rounded or truncate to base; clearly not C. mollis or submollis; inflorescences and leaves not glabrous; stamens always much fewer than 15; inflorescences clearly not glabrous. The differences in leaf shape between coccinea and holmesiana seem pretty arbitrary and an even slightly confident ID to species level seems impossible without fruiting material.
