Description

Nuttallia obscurata (Dark Mahogany Clam, aka Varnish Clam) are very common on local beaches, and this beach seems to have more than most. I just learned from a friend at Fish & Wildlife that they outcompete the other clams because their syphons are flexible, so they can gather food all around themselves. He said the density of these clams per square foot is far greater than others.

I counted 310 Brant here today. The most I'd seen before were 200. They were looking for eelgrass or sea lettuce, but most seemed to come up with empty bills.
