What, Where and When

The Giant Lacewing was once widespread in Canada and beyond. However, it hasn’t been seen in the eastern parts of North America since the 1950’s. But the experts are optimistic it still exists here, just that it hasn’t been seen or reported. Here’s what to look for:

A mostly black insect that is between 2.5 to and 4 cm centimetres (about 1 to 2.5 inches) long

Mottled wings, which are held tent-like over the insect’s body

Most likely to be found in more remote areas

Attracted to artificial lights, such as light posts, outdoor restrooms and buildings.

Most common time of year to spot one is mid-June through to early August.

Experts from Canada and around the world are using iNaturalist to keep track of where species are found. This is a valuable opportunity for anyone to contribute directly to species conservation decisions — like this assessment of the Giant Lacewing.

Liard Hotsprings is the only location where this species is known in British Columbia; and this is the first record of the species for BC on iNaturalist.

While taking these photos, I remembered George Doerksen, a pioneering dragonfly photographer in British Columbia. He died tragically at Liard Hotsprings in 1981 where he had traveled to photograph Ischnura damula. I never met George but I can share that his beautiful photographs in the wonderful little book, Introducing the Dragonflies of British Columbia and the Yukon by Rob Cannings have influenced my passion for odonates.

Description

two dipper fledglings were being fed by an adult near the highway bridge. One bird was bringing moss to the outside of the nest. There may still have been at least one chick in the nest because a parent brought food to the nest. This pair started nest construction on the outside of the same nest last year before having a second clutch in the old part of the nest.

I saw three mouths in the nest previously and another observer has a photo with 4 mouths in the nest last week. The young were in the nest on the 7th so they probably fledged on the 8th.

Update: three fledglings seen on the 10th.
