Notes/link from my coinciding Mushroomobserver observation below-
Young/primordial pins fruiting beneath Douglas fir and evergreen huckleberry. I harvest/photograph this species at this same location every season from July-November. Only Douglas fir in this canopy.
Harvested/dried a single specimen for herbarium collection.

Found this junco nest on the ground in our garden. Two large Arion slugs were crawling over the rim and into the nest. We read this article about arion slugs preying on small passerines, and parents not defending nests against slugs.

We removed the slugs, hoping to protect the nestlings. The parents returned to the nest when we left. The nestlings seemed to be in good condition.
(Didn't photograph the parents, but they definitely looked like juncos.)

Sadly, a coyote or dog killed an opossum in our yard. I have photos of the mother, but she had large bites so I won't post those photos unless there is some purpose they would serve. Three babies were able to be saved and passed to a certified wildlife rehabilitation person. Photo shows the 3, and second photo shows baby found far from mama's body and it was chilled/slow moving, but later warmed and perked up.
