Gall on Q. phellos leaf. Slight bump on the top of the leaf, larger semi-spherical bump on the bottom of the leaf. Near the midrib but not on it. The bump on the bottom half is covered in whitish spots and tiny ciliate hairs. Inner chamber is single-celled with no additional inner capsule. Larvae inside fill pretty much the entire cavity, so it was incredibly hard to extract them for pics without squishing them. Managed to get one live unsquished larva out. Interesting dark coloration on it.

Small leaf galls on sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua). Mostly on the upper surface, but a few also protruding on the lower surface. Interior of each gall is hollow with a single, tiny (< 1mm) larva/nymph that I can't place, taxonomically. I pulled one out and took a picture of both sides of it. The bottom of the gall is sealed with a white film that might be produced by the critter; this is visible covering a hole on the other side of the leaf, opposite from the gall.

Description

Here are some peculiar changes to the flowers of the Purple Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea. Although the changes look very similar to those caused by the phytoplasma Aster Yellows, they are in fact probably caused by a different organism -- an Eriophyid mite.

The mite-related condition is know as Coneflower Rosette Mite or Coneflower Rosette Gall Mite. But I don't think the genus and species is known for this mite.

Here is a nice image showing this same thing:
