This is a juvenile bird, recently fledged. This bird is considered a major rarity in the Western Cape, and to avoid a rush of people that would cause a desturbance to the young owl the location has been obscured. But I will say that there are two breeding pairs of Verreaux's Eagle Owls that live within the suburbs of George and one of these pairs have now raised two successive young this past season. In previous years the nest and eggs have sadly been destroyed by Pied Crows. This years success gives hope that their population is on the increase within the Garden Route, but they still face other threats, especailly also from people who shoot them and from being hit by cars on the busy roads.
