Description

Gorgeous striped California Kingsnake, my first time finding this morph. These are extremely rare in the bay area, but there are a couple records in this area. I think that since there are multiple very similar specimens in this spot, which all look similar to southern California snakes, that they are all descendants of one / multiple captive striped kingsnakes that were released nearby. I'll be interested to hear if anyone thinks differently though.

Reminder to always obscure coordinates, especially for interesting snakes like this. The spot I was at was entirely trashed by others and many animals had been crushed under rocks. (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/40799711)

Description

A typical Payne's Prairie eastern king snake. They were common 50 years ago, when the prairie had huge numbers of water loving snakes. Over a thousand snakes (mostly banded water snakes and Florida green water snakes) were often run over and killed on a given night in the summertime on the two major highways that cross the basin, and eventually the snake populations crashed. Now, there are far fewer water snakes and perhaps no king snakes at all.

This interesting Fossil is part of my personal collection. These are the 17 million year-old teeth of an extinct Miocene Crocodile, "Thecachampsa antiqua" (ID confirmed by AMNH-NYC Paleontology Dept). The tooth in center is approximately 6 x 1.4 cm, and the circular objects seen within the matrix adjacent to the large, central tooth are the "roots" of additional teeth, just embedded horizontally. Just a little "Ancient Herpetology" for those who may be fascinated with such relics from the "Age of Reptiles", like myself. (And speaking of "relics" - for all you iNat wiseguys, I'm talkin' about the Fossil, not ME!) haha!
