Solitary male hybrid. Trunk multiple from base, branches initially erect then drooping to almost pendulous, apical buds slightly wider than subtending stem, scales broad, apiculus caducous, shade foliage with narrow sharp-tipped needles, exposed foliage blunted ended.

This hybrid is locally common in Auckland, particularly in riparian sites. It is often noted by the shorted statured trees with widely spreading canopy, and suberect to pendulous branches. The apical stem buds are more like those seen in P. laetus - though not as wide.

My son found this on a damp boulder in silver beech (Lophozonia menziesii) forest near the summit of Te Aroha. Initially we both assumed it was a piece of canary yellow nylon from some clothing or rope, perhaps left by a tramper - but on touching it, it contracted and start moving away from where it was touched. I have never seen a terrestrial planarian this colour, width and length (when initially seen I measured it at c.150 mm long, 3-4 mm wide) in New Zealand before. These images show the specimen after it had already started contracting.

Dr Parris and I are currently researching this suggestion.

A single tree growing amongst wheki (Dicksonia squarrosa) in cattle trashed roadside forest remnant. Specimens collected (lodged in AK and CHR) were determined by Peter Heenan (March 2015) as M. laetum however the leaf width, vegetative bud and foliage colour are in my opinion still a very close match for the Chatham Island endemic M. semotum (see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/1836506), and in my view this Mahia occurrence warrants further critical study. More usual M. laetum with brown vegetative buds, narrower, leaves bearing larger more obvious leaf glands are common on Mahia - see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/1737706. I have posted this image as M. semotum - because to me this plant is closer to that species than M. laetum - ideally this posting should be M. aff. semotum but I don't know how to get that on Nature Watch N.Z.
