A few shrubs and seedlings noted as well as hybrids between C. ×virgata and C . macrocarpa i.e. C. macrocarpa × C. ×virgata (C. buddelioides × C. cotoneaster) .

Putative Hybrid Sequence - specimens collected from vicinity of planted and naturalised Corokia ×virgata (see https://inaturalist.nz/observations/33784854) and self-sown Chatham Island endemic hokotaka (Corokia macrocarpa) shrubs.

The same hybrid is occasionally grown in New Zealand, erroneously labelled there by nurseries as C. macrocarpa.

Description

Fruiting bodies an unbranched vertical structure with a slightly shaggy appearance due to tiny semi-foliose growths randomly dotted up them.
This seems to eliminate all but three NZ species.
These also have a small foliose rosette at the base which is somewhat glabrous. This feature points strongly at Cladonia ochrochlora.
Growing along the side of a large fallen beech tree.
Not been officially collected from Nelson but everything fits.

Growing on same rock as https://inaturalist.nz/observations/16727504. Within this group and as with other all flowers above leaf (But is this just substrate related?) Note I didn't touch the dorsal sepal it just seems to be doing its own thing above the labellum completely detached in the frontal view. I suppose the petals are nearly as long as lateral sepals. (Not sure what nearly implies for Corybas?)

Description

Common. Undoubtedly cultivated on the grounds but also now established from rooted pieces discarded perhaps in garden waste, as seen in adjoining shrubbery and forest.

As with other locations where I have seen this species wild in New Zealand proper no flowers noted. Indeed I have never seen this species flowering in New Zealand (and that included my growing some for six years to see if it would flower).

This is a new record for the Chatham Islands - as a garden escape anyway.

Description

Common - but really difficult to collect. Saxicolous on gabbro and serpentinite rubble in pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) / tawapou (Planchonella costata) / karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus) coastl forest. Associated with Parmotrema tinctorum.

Medulla K- , Cortex K+ yellow, C+ red, KC+ red, UV-. Saxicolous. Thallus large (300 mm diameter), greenish grey when moist, greyish white when dry, smooth, without reticulate cracking, very faintly white-maculate near lobe margins=; lobe margins broad, isidate, isidia sparse, to dense (centrally), cylindrical, simple (unbranched); lower surface with broad, smooth, naked pale brown margin, otherwise more or less densely rhizinate, rhizines simple, black.

Foliicolous on nikau (Rhopalostylis sapida). Discovered by Marley Ford - in the field we suspected this was a species of Strigula but I now think that this is more likely a species of Porina - in time we will find out what the spores tell us.

Saxicolous on shells in sand dunes. Common. Thallus crustose, whitish grey to lead grey, areolate, without marginal prothallus. Medulla I-. Apothecia abundant,rounded to tholliform, lecideine, 1-(3) per areole, black, disc initially concave, maturing rugose (0.2-)0.3(-0.35) mm diameter, margins slight raised. Epithecium blue-black (K-). Hymenium hyaline, I+ blue c.60 microns tall. Paraphyses mostly simple, apices swollen, blue black. Asci cylindrical, Ascospores 1-2 septate, 10(-12.5) x 5 microns.
