Description

Female forked fungus beetle (Bolitotherus cornutus) on artist conch mushroom (Ganoderma applantum). From a sugar maple forest in Cook County, Minnesota. A few mites (Boletoglyphus ornatus) are clustered on the head of the insect. They are not parasitic but need the fungus beetle to transport them to new Ganoderma fungi. The mites live in the spore tubes on the undeside of the fungus and eat spores. Bolitotherus cornutus also depends on Ganoderma which is its larval host.

In the background behind the beetle is a land snail. Its striped shell is like that of Anguispira.
