A few clumps of this grass are growing in the woods off the "South Fenceline Trail" between the first and second houses going east from the trailhead. This area was heavily burned in the "Pine Pond Fire" in 2022. Soil is sandy, part shade to sun. Associated plants: Mollugo verticillata, Pinus taeda (mostly standing and fallen dead), red Bryophyta sp. (Ceratodon purpureus?) Erigeron canadensis.

Roots are hair-like and the grass pulls out easily from the ashy sand. Culms branching from the base. Glumes 4 and 5 mm. Lemma 6-7 mm long with purple banding (mentioned in Gould 's "The Grasses of Texas" for this species.) Central awn 7-8mm, lateral awns 4-5mm.
