A number of shellfish, including this one, were all alive in a group where they appear to to have been trapped in a hollow in the rocks (shown in the third photo). These are rocks that don't usually have any shells but this time there was a significant little community (after an easterly storm). There was a small amount of residual water at low tide and as far as I could see all occupants were alive. Some had crawled up onto the rock where it was dry, but most had stayed in the wet area. I moved a couple to a shallow uncluttered pool to get some photos, then put them back. They were all gone the next time I visited about 4 days later.

Description

During a big minus tide, this long sandbar was exposed, with over a hundred alive adult Strombus alatus on it. When the tide recedes this much, they actually dig their way up out of the sand and prop themselves up as if they are enjoying the fresh air!

It seems risky to me, considering there are gulls and presumably raccoons and so on that might view them as a tasty meal.

And there were no juveniles at all that I could see, unless they remained hidden in the sand.
