If you find large stands of butterflyweed (shown), there is a good chance you will see Coral Hairstreaks. These butterflies seem to have a special affinity for these flowers. A tailless Hairstreak, it is also noted for its lack of a blue (thecla) spot at the lower hindwing angle.

Description

I had previously posted a photo of a violet form 'Olive' Juniper Hairstreak, but the photo was from a distance and the butterfly was a little ragged. I found this photo taken at that time while going through old files on an old flash drive. It is low res unfortunately but the butterfly is in much better shape and is close up. These violet colored Junipers occur rarely in the east, but are fairly common in areas out west where they are considered different subspecies. Just shows the genetics are there even in populations where 99.99% are green.
