This is an intentional deviation from the IUCN first proposed by @nutcracker and people in the Mammal Taxonomic Group agreed. It’s outlined here (https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/loarie/11949-mammal-taxonomy-help-wanted).
Though this taxon change may be further committed on in the future.
We are in the process of potentially retiring the IUCN as our mammal authority in the future. If one of the new authorities we are considering also awknowledges the elk and moose as one species, we may follow suit. It all depends on how those talks ago.
And then we’ll have to have that discussion on whether Alces alces should be called an “elk” or a “moose” all over again :)
Currently we're using ASM's MDD as the reference for mammals but are deviating here https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/74048/taxonomy_details
looks like nutcracker deleted their account
"first proposed by @nut cracker and people in the Mammal Taxonomic Group agreed."
yeah, having a hard time finding the consensus to maintain Alces as split....
It is difficult to track how these exchanges went down because nutcracker's comments are now completely gone.
@bouteloua the separation between elk and moose was first brought up by them in this taxon swap between the red deer and wapiti (https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/3993). They brought it up again in the journal post I mentioned above, but there was no consensus. (I apologize for my poor choice of words.) Rather, there was no pushback. I was not really comfortable with the decision: I would rather we treat taxa as defined by their phylogenetics, not the words used to describe them, but I didn't want to get into another etymological debate with nutcracker...
Now that we are reevaluating the situation, I would prefer we merge Alces americanus and Alces alces into one species.
Yes, or at least that is my position.
The genetic differences between the two "species" are only pronounced at the farthermost extremes of their ranges. Not enough evidence exists to support specific designation. nutcracker only wanted this because people from Europe call this animal "elk", whereas people from North America call this animal "moose".
You can comment on the bottom of the taxon change here:

Only Scott/loarie can adjust mammal taxonomy.
