overconfident computer vision suggestion? |

I've never been involved with a flag like this so not sure how this usually goes. I wouldn't be surprised if the computer vision is overconfident on Gryllus pennsylvanicus, though it is by far the most common Gryllus IME. They can be reliably identified in many places. In Iowa, there are only 4-5 Gryllus. Two species are obligate woodland species and have a narrow head. One occurs only in far southwest Iowa and there is only 1 record ever. The two common species, Gryllus pennsylvanicus and Gryllus veletis are adults at different times of the year. For the rest of the U.S., Weissman and Gray (2019) is a good place to start. I think there are places in the U.S. where Gryllus can only be distinguished by call. In the west there are many species with very small ranges. But in northern U.S. there are few species, usually only G. pennsylvanicus and G. veletis, so it becomes easy to ID them there. Gryllus in my Guide: https://www.inaturalist.org/guides/14496?q=gryllus.
"usually suggested for black field crickets. Usually impossible to reliably ID Gryllus below genus from photos alone."
