clauden Pacific Cod (Gadus macrocephalus)

people are getting confused at seeing Pacific Cod for an Atlantic fish. Should at least make the subspecies available. The information posted for the species, going on to GBIF, is resulting in incorrect spatial analyses.

iNat now has Atlantic and Greenland Cod as separate, but I retroactively split Pacific Cod since this wasn't done when those were added https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/110883

whoops, see
I accidentally split
Gadus macrocephalus -> Gadus macrocephalus, Gadus ogac, Gadus morhua
I reverted, changed to
Gadus macrocephalus -> Gadus macrocephalus, Gadus ogac
and recommitted
here are the obs that may need IDing

When I flagged this in 2019, I thought it was aberrant--as said above. But is a confusing situation. I thought it had recently changed again, and thus why you did the split. Unfortunately, on Catalog of Fishes (our parent authority, that informs FishBase and WoRMS) BOTH the entries for Gadus macrocephalus and Gadus ogac today are listed as currently valid names in Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. This is a mix-up (recent?). The situation: Gadus ogac is an Arctic/Atlantic fish, in small numbers, occupying a coastal niche. In Atlantic, the main species is Gadus morhua. In the Pacific , there is its descendant, Gadus macrocephalus--also dominant in region. Genetically, however ogac is seen as same as macrocephalus. So, taxonomic authorities in 2017 changed ogac to macrocephalus, despite ecological, morphological, and especially distributional differences. Unlike many species changes, this one has important management consequences. Both macrocephalus and morhua are commercial species, and may be expanding into the Arctic with climate change. Thus, it is important to distinguish records of the endemic, but non-commercial (solitary, does not school in numbers, so not worth fishing) ogac in the Arctic from the latter two abundant species. This becomes difficult if the Pacific species, macrocephalus, is also the name for ogac in Arctic/Atlantic--even if 'correct' with current genetics. With OBIS, this is a new headache as it will only display records under valid WoRMS names. With GBIF, at least the iNat observations have photos AND distributions--and not requiring WoRMS current names. The photos here confirm these Atlantic/Arctic codfishes are of ogac-type. So based on maps & photos, we could do tags to separate Pacific vs ogac types of macrocephalus. Or do an exception in iNat from FishBase? I believe these species will be changed again, but for now, ogac is considered only a synonym of Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus. I am keen to hear your curation decision, to help us with these occurrences.
