"
I disagree with rank subspecies for this. In my Flora of southeastern North America, I accord it species rank, based in part on the most careful study done of it and its relationship with K. angustifolia, and the taxonomic conclusions to be drawn from that: "Southall & Hardin (1974) favored species status for K. carolina because of its essentially allopatric distribution relative to K. angustifolia (the 2 meet in Southampton County, VA), the near absence of intermediates or hybrids in nature, and because "significant morphological and anatomical differences have developed and remain constant between these two species when grown together."
The differing ploidies assure that the two can only produce sterile hybrids (hence are biological species)."
@eraskin no biggie, the system really does need a bit of work! It's super easy to overlook the pale yellow "deviation" text on the draft taxon change.
@kueda is this one reversible? https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/75421
Just to confirm - the plan is to revert https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/75421 to preserve this deviation https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_framework_relationships/234502 ? If so I can revert it
Ok reverted and deviation repaired. Thanks for pointing out https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/help-prevent-disruptive-taxon-changes-with-validation-process/8941 @bouteloua - I'll chime in there
see https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/164337-Kalmia-carolina/taxonomy_details, which was added 15 February 2019
but https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/75421, which was committed 19 April 2020
was there a discussion somewhere about removing this deviation and following POWO instead?
