Bryum barnesii is usually regarded as a distinct species, but many plants and populations intermediate between Bryum barnesii and Bryum dichotomum occur (Holyoak 2003).

Has it been proven that they are a single species?

In western North America, both species exist, are easily recognizable, and virtually never intergrade.

I do not agree with adding the Dutch common name ''Bryum barnesii J.B. Wood ex Schimp. ---- Geelkorrelknikmos'' to this species and I expect it is related to lumping both species to one species.
