wdvanhem Calystegia inflata

POWO treats as C. sepium ssp. americana and it isn't accepted by the majority of other authorities. Suggest swapping C. sepium ssp. americanum. European observations of this species are probably mostly or all incorrect.

@wdvanhem

Usually, when curators propose a change, they notify at least the main experts on that taxon, rather than act alone. Moreover, for such a very complex group, where even authoritative experts often write "not sure".

What current authorities sources for American species Calystegia have you used?
Please show a book or scientific article that says "Calystegia inflata is a synonym for Calystegia sepium ssp. americana". I have read all the articles of Dr. Brummitt and other authors, but I could not find it anywhere.

The list of species on iNaturalist may differ from the list of species on POWO. This has already been discussed. POWO only collects data for names, but is not an authoritative source in and of itself.

For example.
In Russia we use name Calystegia inflata Sweet
https://www.plantarium.ru/page/view/item/7780.html
but in POWO only Calystegia inflata G.Don.
You can see that these are different names and they may belong to different real species. However, the first name is completely absent in POWO. They forgot to include it in their base. That is, it is not Russian botanists who write the names incorrectly (as you think), but the compilers POWO do very poorly.

So I might have executed this poorly (although this flag dates back almost a year and there was no input in that time). Here is what I'm understanding based on your info:

Calystegia inflata G.Don. = C. sepium americanum
Calystegia inflata Sweet = distinct species

Oof. This is a big reason why iNat should include the taxonomic authority on taxon pages (they don't, because apparently it's too complicated and discourages citizen science).

So I am by no means an expert in taxonomy of Calystegia. It seems that Calystegia inflata Sweet is a legitimate taxon in Eurasia. Okay.

What is the best solution here? Could reverse swamp Calystegia sepium americanum for Calystegia inflata and then take time to curate North American observations (which are probably entirely or mostly C. sepium).

@igor_kuzmin @wdvanhem : Calystegia inflata G.Don. and Calystegia inflata Sweet are the same species, and the author is G.Don, published in:
Sweet's Hortus Britannicus: or, a catalogue of all the plants indigenous or cultivated in the gardens of Great Britain, arranged according to the natural system / by Robert Sweet. 3d. ed., greatly enl. and improved. Ed. by George Don, F. L. S. London
See: https://www.ipni.org/n/265662-1

If you have another reference for the description of this species by Sweet, please tell us.

@igor_kuzmin : if you find missing species in POWO or any other issue, please email to bi@kew.org (see: https://powo.science.kew.org/contact). They are very nice people, and they appreciate any feedback. They usually answer quickly to requests.
