Lots of misidentifications due to misleading iNat CV suggestions |

It looks like the CV has caught up & things are under control now. |
There's currently lots of weird stuff in the Medetera collection. It looks like many dolichopodids but also small flies from many other families end up here.
Before you ID something as a Medetera, make sure to confirm the following characteristics:
1. The third and fourth vein of the wing converge towards the tip of the wing. For example, see this specimen.
2. There's a flattened patch at the distal end of the scutum before the scutellum. Also visible in this specimen.
3. The mouthparts are large and conspicuously protrude from the bottom of the face, e.g., see this specimen.
Medetera also have a very characteristic stance that makes it easy for experienced observers to ID them from a distance. However, this characteristic is often misinterpreted by inexperienced observers. There are many small flies with relatively long front legs whose stance superficially resembles that of Medetera. So please don't ID on the basis of this character unless you know what you're doing.
