the biology of the two taxa are too different to be subspecies.
Z.vivipara give birth.
Z.carniolica lay eggs.

They are also very different at nuclear genetic level.
If you give me an email I will add some research

please contact Reptile Database https://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/species?genus=Zootoca&species=vivipara&search_param=%28%28search%3D%27Zootoca+vivipara%27%29%29 (FYI @uetz) and see if they'll get this in their next update, if not please reopen/report back here

RD has now elevated this
we're deviating until we can create the split https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/35453/taxonomy_details
@danieleseglie do you have a sense for where to draw the boundary between these species?

Posted by loarie over 1 year ago

if you mean geographic boundary there are some known Z.carniolica population for sure. Some other to be discovered. In general Z.carniolica tend to stay at lower altitudes.

we need to make a split based on geography otherwise we have to roll all IDs of Zootoca vivipara back to Zootoca which would be disruptive. The best would be to upload a visual explaining where to draw the dividing line as I've done here

if it helps, at least in the italian population of carniolica, all the individuals are marked as Z.v.carniolica right now .

For further details wait for @danieleseglie , I think he could give you all the exact areas where carniolica lives, as the 2 species does not overlap as far I know

Hi @loarie , @desversen ,

Hope these can help,
Best,
