According to the Flora Gallica (Tison J.-M., De Foucault B., 2014), Ononis repens seems to now be a subspecies of Ononis spinosa (Ononis spinosa ssp procurrens). The subspecies maritima is marked as a synonym to the subspecies procurrens.

Ononis spinosa ssp hircina seems to have moved to be its own species, Ononis arvensis ssp arvensis.
