Monk Parakeet

Myiopsitta monachus

Summary 4

Monk Parakeets (also called Quaker Parrots) are originally from South America, but escaped captive birds have formed feral populations in many US cities, including Houston. These medium-sized parrots are rare visitors to the Arboretum, usually seen flying high overhead in small groups. They look like Mourning Doves when flying, but they are greenish overall and make loud, shrieking calls. They forage for seeds on the ground.
