Ticking Frog

Geocrinia leai

Summary 3

Geocrinia leai, is a frog which is sometimes given the euphemism, Lea's Frog; which is of course derived from its name. It is locally more commonly known as the Ticking Frog. It is a species in the taxonomic family, Myobatrachidae and is endemic to southwest Western Australia. As with the other species in the genera, Geocrinia (recently renamed as Anstisia), it is restricted to the high rainfall region at the south west of Western Australia; the very same Walpole/Nornalup district occupied by cogenor Geocrinia lutea. Geocrinia leai was previously not thought to extend north of the Porongurup Range but has recently been shown to exist in large numbers on the north side. It is a climbing species preferring moist forested areas. The tadpoles of this species are relatively small and take along time to develop - up to 4 months. Considered a common but old species with several different lineages identified.
Breeds late autumn and winter compared to all other Geocrinia breeding in spring.
