Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: Males; yellow/brown elongated cluster – catkin, 3 inches long Female; brown bud, red stiles at tip
Leaves: 2½-5 inches long, 1¼-3 inches wide, widest above the middle, taper to sharply pointed tip, rounded to somewhat heart-shaped base, edges coarsely double-toothed
Bark: new twigs red-brown-grayish and densely covered in mix of soft, white hairs and bristly glandular hairs, older bark light gray/brown with scattered white lenticels and eventually develops a criss-cross pattern
Fruit/Seed: round nut, 1/3-½ inch diameter, within green husk, husk is up to twice as long as nut and jagged and ruffled at tip
Height: 4-16 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: open woods, thickets, savanna, prairie
