• Shape: Understory tree
• Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
• Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; ¾-2 ¼ inches long, red/brown, composed of tightly closed scales, female; 1/8-1/2 inch long, green, nondescript

• Leaves: oval, pointed tip, double toothed, finely hairy, 2-5 inches long and 1-2 inches wide
• Bark: grey/brown, long “stripy” textured rectangular plates
• Fruit/Seed: elongated cluster of inflated, 1/3-1 inch long papery sacs
• Height: 20-50 feet
• Flowering: April - May
• Habitat: hardwood forest, upland slopes, wooded bluffs, old fields
