Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, ¼-2 inches long, white with red/yellow/purple/brown tips
Leaves: narrowly oval, 1-3 ½ inches long, 2-6 times longer than wide, widest above the middle, edges often rolled under or wavy, underside densely covered in wooly hairs
Bark: young branches densely hairy
Fruit/Seed: elongated cluster of capsules that are 3/16-1/2 inch long, yellow-red when mature, covered in woolly hairs
Height: 1-10 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: prairies, savannas, dunes, bluffs, rock outcrops
