Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: >: Brown/yellow elongated cluster – catkin, males ¾-1 inch long, females 1/3-3/4 inch long
Leaves: ¾-1½ inch long, ½-1 inch wide, tip broadly rounded, base wedge-shaped, toothed edges
Bark: gray-red/brown, pale lenticels
Fruit/Seed: erect, stout, short-cylindric clusters, 1/3-1 inch long
Height: 4-12 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: open bogs, fens, peatlands, swamps
