Shape: Tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: cone-like structure, Male; globular to oblong, 1/8-1/6 inch long, creamy white pollen sacs, loose collar of brown, papery scales, Female; erect, egg shaped, ¼-3/8 inch long, 10-25 cone scales are greenish with deep rose red edging
Leaves: needle-like, tight clusters of 10 to 35, soft, ½-1 inch long
Bark: rough, brownish gray flaky scales
Fruit/Seed: egg shaped cone, ½-¾ inch long
Height: 30-85 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: boggy swamps, lakeshores, along streams, upland forest
Other: This is a deciduous conifer, meaning it is a cone bearing tree like pines and spruces but it is not evergreen, its needles turn yellow and fall off in the fall.
