Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; yellow, up to 1 inch long, female; green-red, 1 ½ inches long, male and female on different plants
Leaves: rounded tip, ¾-2 ¼ inches long, ¾ inch wide, 2-5 longer than wide, upper surface green and lower surface white
Bark: Brown
Fruit/Seed: cluster of pear shaped capsules, brown/red
Height: 1-5 feet
Flowering: April - June
Habitat: bogs, fens, swamps, peatlands, floating mats
