Shape: Multi-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; 2-4 per cluster, 1 ¼-3 ½ inches long, female; red, 2-10 per cluster, 1/3 inch long
Leaves: egg shaped with bluntly pointed tip, 2-3 ½ inches long, 1-2 ½ inches wide, finely and singly toothed
Bark: gray-red/brown, smooth, scattered pale horizontal lenticels
Fruit/Seed: stout, oval to egg-shaped, cone-like clusters, up to ¾ inch long
Height: 6-14 feet
Flowering: May - June
Habitat: mixed forest, clearings, river banks, shores, rock outcrops, bluffs, cliffs
