Shape: Tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: Brown/yellow and red elongated cluster – catkin, males 2-3 ¾ inches long, females ½-1 inch long with red styles
Leaves: larger towards base, 2-3½ inches long, 1¼-2 1/3 inches wide, abruptly tapers to sharply pointed tip, base rounded to nearly straight across, edges irregularly double-toothed
Bark: white, peeling in papery horizontal strips, older bark on lower trunk turns dark gray, furrowed and scaly
Fruit/Seed: cylindric, cone-like clusters, ¾-1¾ inch long
Height: 60-90 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: upland forest
