Shape: Many-stemmed shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; yellow/brown, cylindrical, 1/3-¾ inch long, female; ¼-1/3 inch long, red filament-like stigmas
Leaves: ¾-2½ inches long, 1/3-¾ inch wide, widest above the middle, tips rounded with several pairs of rounded teeth, long taper to wedge-shaped base, surfaces heavily dotted with minute yellow glands
Bark: grey/brown, twigs red/brown
Fruit/Seed: flattened, egg-shaped nutlets, 1/8 inch long, stubby beak, compact cluster 1/3-½ inch long,
Height: 2-4 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: lake shores, stream banks, bogs, fens
