Shape: Tree
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, males 1 ½-3 ½ inches long with red stamens, females 2 ¼-6 ¼ inches long with red stigmas
Leaves: egg shaped with pointed tip, 2 ½-3 ¾ inches long, 1 ¼-1 ¾ inches wide, small rounded teeth, underside can have rusty blotches, leaf stem is round
Bark: smooth, thin, brown-gray, flat-topped vertical ridges
Fruit/Seed: cluster of green, egg-shaped capsules
Height: 40-80 feet
Flowering: April - May
Habitat: upland forest, forest edges, parkland
