Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: elongated cluster – catkin, male; pendulous, clusters of 1-3, 2-4 ¼ inches long, female; erect, stout, 1/3-1/2 inch long
Leaves: elongated heart shaped, 2-4 ¼ inches long, 1 ¼-2 ¾ inches wide, doubly toothed
Bark: white with gray and pink, can peel in papery horizontal strips, often remains smooth
Fruit/Seed: cylindrical clusters, 1½-2¼ inches long
Height: 50-80 feet
Flowering: May
Habitat: rocky slopes, hardwood forest
