Shape: Multi-stemmed creeping shrub
Leaf/Branch Arrangement: Alternate
Flower: White simple shaped, 5 petals
Leaves: palmately lobed, 5-7 lobes, 1-2 inches long, 1 ¼-3 inches wide, coarsely toothed, heart shaped base
Bark: smooth, gray, tiny brown lenticels, the thin outer layer peels away
Fruit/Seed: round berry, ¼-3/8 inch diameter, covered in bristly and glandular hairs, ripens to translucent red
Height: 1-3 feet
Flowering: May - June
Habitat: swamps, bogs, conifer and mixed forests, thickets, ravines, rocky shores
Other: leaves and stems emit skunk-like odor when broken
