Size: 35-43mm; Wingspan 53-64mm
Mature ♂︎ most similar to little skimmer and best distinguished by secondary genetalia. It also lacks the feint "spectacles" of little skimmer and the edge of the frons has a dark wash.
♀ and young ♂︎ have a dark humerla stripe on the otherwise unmarked thorax. Some young ♂︎ may have patterning on the sides of the thorax.
