Description: Unlike most woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker lives and forages on the ground as well as in trees. It has a long sharp bill and distinctive barring on the wings. It has a white rump and a black half moon shaped patch below the neck. The male has bold red patch below the eye. The underside of the wing is red and flashes when the bird is in flight. The call is a “kwik wik wik wik that may continue for several minutes.

Habitat: Open wooded areas.

Fun Facts: It digs for beetles and grubs with its sharp bill.
