Silver carp (Asian carp)

Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

Summary 2

Family: Cyprinidae

Silver carp(Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are one of the species of Asian carp. There is no evidence that they are established and reproducing in the Great Lakes, but they have been a cause for alarm. Originally from eastern Asia, they were introduced into the Mississippi River in the 1970s. They feed by forcing water over structures in the back of the mouth that strains microscopic “plants” and animals from the water. This species has a tendency to jump out of the water when startled, such as by boats passing by.

How to recognize: Eyes low on the head, generally below the level of the mouth. Small scales. There is a low ridge running along the bottom of its body, from the anus to the head. Body color is silver. Up to 4 feet long. Up to 5 feet /1.5 meters long.
