Brown trout(Salmo trutta) are a popular sport fish. Originally from Europe, they have been widely introduced throughout the Great Lakes. Most common in rivers and creeks, but also live in the big lakes. Generally prefer slightly warmer streams than brook trout, which have a tendency to outcompete and replace. Usually reside out of the current behind rocks or log piles, then dart out to feed. Eat aquatic insect larvae and small fishes.

How to recognize: Small fleshy fin on the back in front of the tail. Brown body with dark spots and red spots surrounded by pale haloes. Several large black spots on gill cover. Few to no spots on tail. Mouth usually extends past rear of eye. “Lake form” is silver body with black spots. Up to 3 feet /0.9 meters long.
